Regular Classes

You can find a short description to Boulder Free School events by clicking the name on the calendar. Here are some descriptions of classes that are taught regularly:

Sustainability by the Numb3rs

The last Thursday of each month, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM, Fuse @ the Riverside (Broadway and Arapaho)

Boulder Free School partners with Clean Energy Action to bring you Sustainability by the Numb3rs. Today it takes about 15 Terawatts (1.5 x 1013 Watts) of power to run human civilization.  On average, that’s about 2 kW (2,000 Watts) per human being, but energy use is not evenly distributed.  North Americans on average use more like 10 kW (10,000 Watts — equivalent to having about 100 human energy slaves working tirelessly for you day and night), while Bangladesh clocks in at less than 300 W per capita.  If everyone were to aspire to the North American way of life, we would need to increase global energy production by about a factor of 6 or 7, to something like ~100 Terawatts (1 x 1014 W).  What would it take to do that?  Is it practical for Colorado?  For the US?  For the UK?  For Bangladesh?

This class is complete with homework and readings. Check out the class website here.

Spanish

Our Spanish classes are conversational and immersion based.  They are practical, fun and community oriented, and utilize alternative education models. There are also opportunities for weekly conversation practice on Monday evenings at the Beet collective.

Level 1:  Focus on present tense conversation

Level 2:  Focus on past, present and future conversation

This class is currently (as of 4/15/14) being redesigned. Contact Sarita at sarita.goldie@gmail.com if you are interested in joining this class.

Coursera Study Sessions

Coursera is a website that partners with universities throughout the world to provide free online classes. From their website: “We envision a future where everyone has access to a world-class education that has so far been available to a select few. We aim to empower people with education that will improve their lives, the lives of their families, and the communities they live in.” This mission aligns with Boulder Free School’s mission, and their classes are free, so we offer study sessions for any Coursera classes that a community member is enrolled in. Let us know if you want to create a study session for a free online class that you are taking! You can also visit the Coursera Meetup group to find out about Coursera Meetups.
